Understanding Microclimates on Mt Coot-tha

Microclimates: Small Worlds Within the Forest

Our sensor network reveals fascinating microclimate patterns that would be invisible without continuous monitoring.

Ridge vs Gully

The Summit Lookout station consistently records temperatures 3–5 °C higher than the Botanic Gardens Creek sensor during midday. This difference intensifies during heatwaves.

Why This Matters

These microclimates provide climate refugia — places where species can survive extreme events. During the recent heat event, the creek zone stayed 6 °C cooler than the ridge.

Data from SUMMIT01 and CREEK01.
